When you first commission a creative firm to produce a logo design to represent your business identity you are likely to consider the colours, symbols and graphics that you feel would best represent your company ethos and brand, however there are further design considerations that need to be taken into account.

Good design also needs to acknowledge that the logo will be applied to various different mediums that will include digital media such as web sites, emails, and .pdf brochures, and printed materials including stationery, promotional materials, and maybe even signage - and as such will need to work well as a brand design in each and every situation.

The best logo designs are simple – not only does this make them practical from a usability perspective, but as far as branding is concerned, the simpler the design the easier it is for people to remember; people process an image in their mind more readily that words, and the images associated with your design may be remembered ahead of your company name.

Good design should encompass the following practical considerations.

1. Any design should work equally well whether viewed in full colour or black and white as often logo designs need to be photocopied – or sent through a fax machine, where colour is not an option. The brand image needs to send the same strong message even when in greyscale.

2. A logo design should be clearly readable (the text/wording as well as any image linked with the wording) whether as big as a billboard, or tiny for placing on a business card for example. It can be useful to view your design as a much smaller image when making a decision to assess whether it works at all sizes.

3. Your logo should be unique; when people view your company logo, you want them to associate that design with your firm and no other.

4. Colours – the more colours used in a design, the more expensive that design can be to print in certain circumstances, so ideally it’s good to try and keep your image including any wording to no more than 4 different colours.

5. A good logo design should stand the test of time and so whilst the use of modern styling can be advantageous, you should bear in mind whether that same image will be appropriate in ten years time.

A unique and simple logo design can be one of the most effective methods of creating brand name recognition.
